THE ANGLES
The angles are four highly sensitive points that anchor the horoscope to the local horizon and meridian at the moment of birth.
They are the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, and Imum Coeli.
Together, these four points establish the primary axes of the chart and connect the celestial pattern of the horoscope to a specific place on Earth. Planets closely connected with the angles often become especially prominent, visible, or influential in the life.
THE ASCENDANT AND DESCENDANT
The Ascendant marks the eastern horizon—the point where the zodiac is rising at the moment of birth.
Directly opposite it is the Descendant, which marks the western horizon where the zodiac is setting.
Together they create the horizon axis.
The Ascendant is associated with the native: the body, vitality, temperament, orientation, and direct experience of life.
The Descendant describes the place of the other. It is associated with partners, marriage, clients, contracts, significant one-to-one relationships, and open adversaries.
This axis therefore describes one of the fundamental relationships within the horoscope: self and other.
THE MIDHEAVEN AND IMUM COELI
The second major axis is formed by the Midheaven and Imum Coeli.
The Midheaven, commonly abbreviated MC, is the point where the ecliptic intersects the local meridian above the horizon. It is associated with action, vocation, reputation, public visibility, accomplishment, and the ways a person's activities become known in the world.
Opposite the Midheaven is the Imum Coeli, or IC.
The IC lies beneath the horizon and is associated with home, family, ancestry, land, private life, origins, and the foundations from which a person's life develops.
Together, the MC and IC describe the relationship between what becomes visible in the world and what lies at the private foundation of the life.
ANGULARITY
Planets located close to an angle are described as angular.
Angular planets tend to have a greater capacity to make themselves known. Their symbolism often becomes prominent in the person's circumstances, character, relationships, vocation, or major life events.
A planet closely conjunct the Ascendant may strongly affect the native's temperament or physical presence. A planet near the Descendant may become particularly important through relationships. A planet near the Midheaven may become highly visible through vocation or reputation, while a planet near the IC may become deeply connected with family, home, ancestry, or private life.
The closer a planet is to an angle by degree, the more concentrated its angular emphasis can become.
THE ANGLES AND WHOLE SIGN HOUSES
In Whole Sign astrology, the Ascendant sign becomes the entire first house and the Descendant sign becomes the entire seventh house.
The Midheaven and Imum Coeli require an important distinction.
The exact Midheaven does not necessarily fall in the tenth Whole Sign house, and the exact IC does not necessarily fall in the fourth. Depending upon the birth location and time, these points can fall in neighboring houses.
Their actual degree positions are therefore preserved and interpreted independently.
This allows the astrologer to distinguish between the topics belonging to the Whole Sign houses and the additional emphasis created by the exact angles.
THE ANGLES IN TIMING
The angles are also extremely important in predictive astrology.
Transits, eclipses, secondary progressions, solar arcs, directions, and other timing techniques that closely activate an angle can correspond with periods when circumstances become particularly immediate or visible.
An activation of the Ascendant may emphasize the native personally. The Descendant may bring relationships or other people to the foreground. The Midheaven may emphasize vocation, public standing, or direction, while the IC may bring attention to home, family, property, ancestry, or private foundations.
Because the angles depend upon the exact birth time, they also provide astrologers with some of the most precise points available for timing events.
The four angles give the horoscope its orientation in the world. They establish where the heavens met the horizon and meridian at birth, creating the framework through which the rest of the chart becomes personal.
